Can you feel your brain starting to disengage from work as the holidays approach? It’s difficult to stay focused on the task at hand when cards are coming in the mail and parties are filling up your calendar.
Distractions are everywhere.
How do you stay focused when your attention is being pulled in so many directions?
Here are some tips to help you stay productive so you can continue to work efficiently as the holidays approach.
1. Do a brain drain
There is likely so much going on in your brain right now your head might feel like it’s going to explode. Now is the time to do a brain drain and get it all out of your head and onto a master list. Divide the page into two columns: work and personal, and just let it all come out.
2. Schedule work and personal tasks
When you have allotted time on your calendar to focus on your holiday tasks, it frees your mind to concentrate on work during your work hours. Distractions will be less of an annoyance.
3. Shop online
Avoid the holiday shopping crush by doing your shopping online. This is a more efficient use of your time and many online stores will deliver your gifts already wrapped.
4. Avoid giving deadlines for your clients
If at all possible, avoid giving your clients firm deadlines during the holidays. Remember, this is a festive time for them too … and they may also be battling distractions.
5. Defer implementing good ideas
Now is not the time to spend ramping up a great idea. It will instantly lose its momentum in a matter of days and then may be forgotten altogether. Park those great ideas in a notebook, and then stay focused on tasks that must get accomplished before the end of the year.
