The tale of the haunted graphic designer
It was a dark and stormy night when I heard the cry for help from Jennifer, a successful graphic designer. What she told me sent shivers down my spine.
“The piles of things (mostly bookkeeping) that are backlogged in my business are alarming and highly intimidating. What can I do?”
Having a scary mountain of mundane tasks that keep slipping to the bottom of your never-ending To Do list is a nightmare. Especially when you would rather spend your time doing what you love in your business.
Unfortunately, those hair-raising routine To Dos must get done. So, I shared with Jennifer, 3 productivity boosts to battle her terrifying tasks.
1. Work in short bursts. I call this your Productivity Dash. It works like this: set a timer for 25 minutes and remove all distractions. When the buzzer goes off, either take a quick break and then set the timer for another 25-minute dash, or schedule your next Productivity Dash in your calendar. The key is to reward yourself at the end. Those little Halloween chocolate bars work wonderfully!
2. Set the mood. What motivates you and fires up your momentum to get stuff done? For some, it’s cranking up the tunes and getting down to business. Others prefer a softer approach, such as a scented candle and spa sounds. Whatever gets you in the mood and makes the mundane more fun, go for it.
3. Find a partner. Do you know another business owner who experiences the same struggles? If so, it’s time to team up. “Misery loves company”, so arrange to have regular check-ins to stay motivated and hold each other accountable.
If all else fails, now might be the time to invest in a bookkeeper and/or an assistant. The time you spend doing the administrative tasks yourself is time better spent on revenue-generating activities.
