What to do when your systems compromise your service

As you know, I’m a huge fan of using systems in your business to make it run more efficiently. However, as I recently experienced, sometimes systems can get in the way of service.

It’s important to always keep the customer in mind when you’re designing your systems. Otherwise, they’ll get lost in the shuffle. This often happens if you’re designing system with blinders on. That means you go through the steps but never really test the process with the end user.

In this video I’ll show you why this often-missed step is so important and what happened to me when it got missed.

How to stop doing everything in your business

“If I want something done right, I’ll do it myself.”

These words may have become the mantra for running your business, and may have become your belief system.

You want things done your way and you believe it will take you longer to tell someone how to do it than if you just did it yourself.

And that’s how your DIY business is created.

The reality is this … doing everything yourself is impossible, impractical and it’s no fun AT ALL. More importantly, it isn’t sustainable for you or your business.

Watch how you can change the DIY mantra that may be replaying in your head that leads you to do things you really don’t like doing in your business (and likely aren’t that good at doing!)

Your challenge this week is to be aware of when the DIY mantra starts playing in your head, and to change how you respond.

At first, it may take you more time to train someone how to do things, or to write out a step-by-step system for getting it done. Remind yourself that this is time well invested in you, your team and your business.

Do this if you want to scale your business

You do so much in your business. In many ways it’s an extension of you. It’s always with you and even in your off-time (is there such a thing?) your mind can’t help but wander to it. I was exactly the same the way until I learned a lesson that changed everything.

It happened when I was having a hard time keeping all the balls in the air. It felt like everything was spinning and I just couldn’t keep up with the demands anymore. I started wondering if I even wanted to.

I started to feel like a failure in my business. Can you relate? [Read more…]

How to make it a day of time well spent

time spend

As a productivity expert I’m careful with how I use my time. I try to use it for activities that will advance my work and my life in a direction that is right for me.

Time is the most important investment you can make. Time is more valuable than money. Why? Because money is a renewable resource. Time is not.

You have the same 1,440 minutes in your daily time bank as I do. Each day it’s replenished with 1,440 more minutes for you to use at your discretion. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

How do you invest your time? [Read more…]

Are you doing too many chores in your business?

chores

This weekend we open our cottage for the season. I can already smell the scent of bacon and coffee in the morning.

I was telling my friend Carol how excited I am and she turned to me with an exhausted look and said, “Isn’t having a cottage a lot of work?”

The simple answer is Yes, but we learned early on a very important fact.

The secret to being a happy cottage owner is to spend less time on chores and more time doing the things we love. [Read more…]

The reason your CRM sucks

CRMHave you fallen out of love with your Customer Relationship Management tool? After investing your time, money and energy to choose the right CRM for your business, you’re still not seeing the results you anticipated, and now you’re having second thoughts. Chances are, you’ve gone back to your old ways of tracking prospects, or perhaps you’re not tracking them at all, and your sales have slumped.

3 steps to investing your time wisely

investing your timeI have a confession. I am addicted to the TV show Gilmore Girls. (Yes, I’m late to the game since it’s been off the air for a number of years … thank you Netflix). I binge-watched the whole first season in a matter of days. My family saw this as a huge waste of time.

Which made me think of you. [Read more…]
